Union General Grant had recently arrived in Chattanooga with reinforcements to break the Confederate siege. Standing on Orchard Knob, to the right of the signal flag, Generals Gordon Granger, George Thomas and Ulysses Grant watch as their Union troops in the distance charge up Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863. The Union troops continued to the top of the ridge without orders to do so. The Confederates were driven back and retreated southward.
